What is E2E testing?

In the wild, you will often hear developers stating, “I’m just running a test,” but what they are testing isn’t always clear. It’s important to understand that there are many types of testing, all with important features needed to ensure your code works as intended. Below, I will highlight the difference between Unit, Integration and E2E testings, when you might use each, and what the Gesso team uses.

Unit Testing

A test type used to test against individual code units. Say you have an expand/collapse component. These tests verify fundamental pieces of your logic, such as “Does the component expand when you click on it?”.

Integration Testing

This test checks the interaction between integrated components. Integration tests allow you to verify the “integrations” between your services, i.e. API calls or database queries. It is particularly important when working for Gesso to ensure we integrate with our partners, such as BigCommerce or Drupal, properly.

So, what do we use on Gesso? Well, we use a powerful tool called Cypress that can handle all three types of testing. In addition, Cypress has an amazing visualizer that allows you to view the test run in real-time against your test code.
